Gillian’s Closet – My Little Girl is Growing Up

This summer I decided one of the things I wanted to accomplish was to tackle and organize my daughter’s closet.  She is almost 15 years old and has “outgrown” her closet.  It’s been a source of aggravation and of disagreements between her and I for the last couple of years.  She wants to get rid of all the “baby stuff” so she has room for her clothes, shoes, etc.  and I understand that, but there are things in there that I am really attached to.  I’m pretty sure on more than one occasion I had to pull the “it’s my house and if I want to keep things in this closet, I can.” Yep, I heard my mother in those words too.

So, first the sorting and negotiating had to take place.  There was a major conflict between her and I regarding many of the items that I would not let her get rid of.  Like, the Disney castle and figurines that we purchased on our Disney World vacation.  I love that castle, it’s so cute, I remember playing with it with her and how much fun we had.  I just cannot sell it or donate it.  The bin of Disney princess costumes that I love so much.  Especially the Belle costume that she wore for most of our trip to Disney World.  The cute Disney princess lamp she’s had since she was 3 years old, the original valance and roman shades that were custom made for her nursery, all her Disney snow globes that once were on display……I get emotional just thinking back to when she was small and how much she liked all those things and how time just flew by and she is becoming a young lady.  Those days are gone and I am getting emotional in front of my computer writing this.  All she wants to do is “get rid of this baby stuff” and I can’t bear to see it go.  It’s silly, right?  Well, we shall see…
