When Do You Need a Custom Closet?
When you want to completely optimize your closet space, your closet has a unique shape, you have obstacles in your closet that you need to build around, you want to take advantage of the ceiling height of your closet or you want a closet design that fits your specifications and personal style, a custom closet system is a must.
The Benefits of a Custom Closet
Custom Closets Put Everything Within Reach
With a custom closet system, all of your clothes, accessories, shoes, handbags and more will have a place to call home. Whether your closet is small reach-in closet or a large walk-in closet, you probably feel like you don’t have enough space to keep everything in order. When you have Austin-Morgan Closets to guide you through the process, organizing your closet isn’t the overwhelming challenge it may appear to be.
Custom Closets Are a Smart Home Improvement
Everyone from home builders to realtors to homeowners now considers the closet as a space worth improving. Upgrading your closets from builder grade to custom closet systems is a significant selling point that buyers appreciate. It optimizes available space, which is an important consideration to the majority of prospective home buyers. A custom closet communicates to potential buyers how important small details are to you and how well you care for your home. Homeowners recognize the value of having a spacious, organized closet that serves as a focal point of their home rather than simply a place to hang clothing.
Custom Closets Increase the Storage Capacity of Your Home
We can all agree, many Arizona homes lack storage space, particularly climate-controlled storage. It is neither possible nor practical to store many of your belongings in the garage, and most Arizona homes lack basements. As a result, the space inside your home frequently serves as a primary storage area. Making the most of the space you have becomes critical to living a well-organized life. Our custom closet designers understand how to maximize the storage capacity and functionality in every room of your home. We utilize high-quality materials and versatile storage solutions to maximize space and add beauty to your home.
Make Better Wardrobe Choices with Custom Closets
A custom closet allows you to easily see what you already own, allowing you to avoid purchasing items merely because you can’t find them. You’ll have more space in your closet to organize your clothes into distinct zones, allowing you to hang pieces you wear together without having to go looking for the other half of your outfit. Creating closet organization zones for each type of item makes it easier to put things away, and the easier it is, the more likely it is that you will put things where they belong and stay organized. Custom closet organizers save you money on unnecessary clothing purchases as well as clothing repair and dry-cleaning costs.
Custom closet solutions organize your entire wardrobe and make it easy to find items, improve your daily outlook and increase the value of your home. Get dressed with less stress knowing that you made a smart investment in your most valuable asset, your home, with custom closet systems designed especially for you.

Custom Closet Design Ideas
Custom Closet Terminology
Reach-In Closets
Defined as a closet that is generally 24″ deep that contains bi-fold, sliding, French or single swing-out doors. Generally hall, linen and many secondary bedrooms have reach-in closets. You cannot walk into a reach-in closet.
Suspended Closet Systems
Based on a metal rail that is secured to the studs, this system is very popular for suspended closet projects. All of the structural components hang off of the rail. The weight of the system is carried by the studs and is very strong. The vertical panels accommodate an engineered wall mounting bracket that attaches to the panel and clips over the rail. Horizontal and vertical adjustment screws make for a perfectly square result.
Advantages of a suspended system:
- No need to remove existing base or crown moldings from the wall
- Does not extend to the floor, so carpeting can easily run underneath the system and changing the flooring is uncomplicated
- Usually less expensive than a floor-based system
- Custom cutouts around heating vents and electrical outlets are usually not necessary
Floor Based Closet Systems
In floor–based closet systems, the closet is raised off the floor by a base cabinet. Usually, the bottom of the base box near the wall is cut away and fitted around the baseboard moldings to ensure a snug fit or moldings can be removed prior to installation. Since floor-based units sit on the floor, it is difficult to change the carpet unless the carpet is removed prior to installation of the closet system.
Advantages of a floor-based system:
- Base and crown moldings can be added for a more polished furniture look
- The best type of closet system available for buildings where walls are constructed with plaster and lath, rather than drywall
Combination Closet Systems
The majority of custom closet systems use a combination of suspended and floor-based pieces to provide the utmost functionality coupled with a beautiful appearance. Having both types of storage systems available allows for optimal organizational solutions to be created for each project or room.
